My Experiences at IUPUI

Personal Training through INShape

Word that summarize my experience

Fun, motivating, easygoing, creative, friendly, rewarding
I'm very happy with my INShape experience and all the progress my client accomplished. My client told me he learned so much about exercise technique and feels so much better about himself. This experience provided me with a new perspective on personal training, and I gained a lot from it. I learned how to correctly design an exercise program that's fun for my client, how to motivate my client, proper techniques for various exercises, and most importantly, I learned to be confident as a personal trainer.

The most rewarding moment from working with my client for 9 weeks was when he was able to do six pull ups without any assisted weight. During our first interview, my client told me that in middle school, he was able to accomplish the most pull ups out of his entire class. He said he'd like to perform at least six pullups, but didn't think he'd ever be able to. I assured him I would do everything I could to make it happen. As the weeks passed, my client gradually gained strength, and when we got to the assisted pull ups on the 8th week, I told him I felt that he could do 6 pull ups without any assistance. He said he didn't think he could do it, but he'd give it a shot. When he completed completed the six pullups using only his body weight; he had the biggest smile on his face. This was a very meaningful moment for me since I was so proud of him and all of his hard work. It made me happy to see him attempt something he was unsure about, and his success definitely boosted both his and my confidence. It's a great feeling to know you're helping someone in reaching their goals and making them feel good about themselves.

Internship at Eskenazi Hospital

The setting I picked for my spring 2023 internship was Eskenazi hospital. Eskenazi offers three different rotations: outpatient clinic, inpatient, and burn/wound. I learned a lot in all three settings and it gave me valuable experience that can help me gain skills, build my resume, and make connections in the healthcare industry. Some of my tasks were to clean, restock, assist the therapist or techs, and observe whenever there was time.

After completing 350 hours in 3 different rotations, my supervisor Sheila, did my final evaluation and she was very pleased with all the feedback she got from each rotation. She told me that the only area I could continue to work on is my assertiveness. It was a bitter sweet moment because I got to meet a lot of great people but I also felt like I had learned everything I could from this intern position. I was very grateful for the opportunity that I got from this internship.

Camp Brosius Leadership Camp

My Top 5 Clifton Strengths:
1. Discipline- I enjoy routine and structure. I like to plan and get things done.
2. Restorative- I am good at figuring out what is wrong and resolving the problem
3. Responsibility- I take ownership in what I say I will do.
4. Strategic- When given a scenario, I can quickly spot the relevant patterns and issues.
5. Relator- I enjoy close relationships with others. I find deep satisfaction in working hard with friends to achieve a goal.
Personal Leadership Style:

While at Camp Brosius, I was able to discover my leadership style and improve my self confidence. My leadership style is making sure that everyone feels included and heard. I am a great active listener and I like to hear people's suggestions. I make sure everyone is respectful to each other in order for the group to get the task done. I try to verbally praise people by saying things like "That's a great idea" or "Great job everyone".

Motor Activity Clinic

This class was one of my favorite classes because it gave me a great experience. For six weeks, my classmate and I worked with a 6-year-old child with cerebral palsy. In this class, I learned to think outside the box and design a program for a pediatric client. I learned to make modifications in case the task was too easy or too hard. I also had to be prepared to modify an activity on the spot, in case the pre planned modifications didn't work. It was truly an amazing and rewarding experience to help someone perform tasks that she had previously been unable to perform.
Clinic Activity Plan #4 for swimming
Small Moment Reflection of Session #5
In my theory and practice of cardio exercise class, we had to create a video of ourselves teaching a cardiovascular-based group fitness workout. The objective of creating this video was to understand the different types of cardio workouts and make it into something fun and creative for other people to do. Many people believe that cardio consists exclusively of running; however, there are numerous cardio activities that people may engage in. There are continuous, interval, and circuit types of workouts. Then they can pick from endless possibilities of kickboxing, dance fitness, HITT, Tabata, and a whole lot more to choose from.

I chose to do continuous dance fitness for my workout video. This learning experience helped me get out of my comfort zone, and spread some positivity. Even though I was anxious throughout the filming stage, I did it a couple of times to try and be as energetic and confident as possible. I've always loved exercising and doing activities like Zumba and dancing, but creating a video for other people to watch is something I’ve never done. I felt compelled to widen my horizons and do something I enjoyed but at the same time was still out of my comfort zone. Overall, I had a lot of fun with this learning experience.

P403 Service learning

Wellness Coaching for P420

This course was a hands-on course designed to apply professional knowledge and apply it in specific skills related to the administration of appropriate exercise programming in a variety of client populations. A wellness coach serves as a mentor and advocate for all clients' health and wellness by providing nutritional and physical health advice. For 7 weeks I coached a client in order to achieve her goal of working out consistently, increasing her daily step count and increasing her strength. She wanted to be physically and mentally healthier and by the end of the 7 weeks she said she felt more motivated than ever.

Year-Long Resistance Training Program

In my Sports Strength and Conditioning course, I had to design a year long Resistance training program for a sport season. I had just learned to longboard that pervious summer and I thought it would be cool to design a program for a long boarding competition. This project helped me practice my time management skills in order to get it done on time and I feel more confident in designing a long term program for a client who wants to get ready for their sport season.

Service Learning with Monumental Marathon

My Freshman year I did my service learning at an elementary school, where we trained students to be able to do the 5K monumental marathon. It was my first time working with kids and it was a great experience. I was able to connect with some of the kids and even ran with a group of them on the day of the monumental marathon. It was a cold day and we were all freezing but once we got running we were all excited to finish the race.

Regatta

IUPUI hosts an annual fall celebration that offers a wide range of activities, competitions, challenges, and more for all Jaguars and their families to enjoy. I made the decision to get a group of friends together and have my now-husband race on the canoes during my senior year at IUPUI. I was thrilled to be a member of the racing team and had a great experience!

Get Onboard Active Living

GOAL University is an after-school prevention program which strives to promote healthy lifestyles in elementary school children by providing educational sessions and activities focused on nutrition and physical activity habits. This experience helped me in leading physical activities in a gym to encourage younger children to enjoy exercising and teaching them about healthy habits. Each week our group drove to the elementary school assigned to us and each person in the group was either in charge of the nutrition activity or the physical activity. Overall, Working with young children was fun, and it improved my leadership and communication skills.

Below there is an example plan of week 2

Indiana Physical Therapy

Locations: Goshen Clinic, Elkhart Clinic, Mishawaka Clinic
After my freshman year of college, I chose to work somewhere where I could get experience. The summer of 2021 I was hired at the Elkhart location of Indiana Physical Therapy as a front desk assistant. I was hired to check in people, give them paper work, scan in documents, clean equipment and lock up important documentations before closing. I eventually learned how to perform all computer activities, therefore I assisted therapists with clients, and even observed them as they worked. It was a great experience for me to work at a physical therapy clinic that also had an occupational therapist. My coworkers really enjoyed working with me and let me come back for breaks and summer of 2022. I have trained new people from other nearby locations and have helped the therapists by translating for people who speak Spanish. My professional experience has strengthened my communication skills, provided me with valuable experience, and made me a more confident individual.
