My Major
Exercise Science B.S
Exercise science is the study of how the body moves and functions through human fitness and wellness. At IUPUI I have gained many experiences that have prepared me for different client populations and given me the chance to do hands on experiences. This degree has laid the foundation to be successful in OT school.
My Career Goal
Occupational Therapist
I am currently attending IUPUI's occupational therapy program. I'd like to focus my career on mental health, hand therapy or older adults. This career will give me the opportunity to help people recover, adapt to their environment, and give them a chance to participate in their everyday life activities.
Why Pursue a BS in Kinesiology?
Why Occupational Therapy?
I have always liked being active and being out in nature. I have enjoyed going on bike rides, jogging, doing Zumba and longboarding. My love for physical activity led me to want to do an exercise science major and get a bachelor degree in kinesiology.
One of the people who shaped me into the person I am today is my grandma. Before she passed away in 2017, I was lucky enough to go visit her in Mexico a few months before her passing. She had been struggling for years with having lots of health problems. She had suffered through a stroke that left half of her body paralyzed but had recovered well from therapy. However, her health condition got worst from having Osteoporosis to her having to go to the doctor all the time. My experience of seeing her sick, in pain and not being able to move much, made me feel helpless. Following her death, I made a promise to myself that I would use therapy to help others have fulfilling lives and special care, just as the nurses and therapists had helped my grandmother manage her illness and extend her life by a couple years.
During my undergrad years, I completed research, observation hours, and I became increasingly interested in occupational therapy. It was interesting to observe different occupational therapists at different types of facilities. Each therapist had their unique strategies and exercises for patients. I was given permission to ask the therapists any questions I wanted and engage in conversations with patients. I'm thrilled to begin a new chapter in my life and work toward being someone in whom others can put their faith while seeking therapy. I'm committed and ready to face anything that comes my way in order to pursue something I'm passionate about and have worked very hard to achieve.
Personal Training Philosophy
My personal training philosophy is to focus on my clients' goals and motivate them to achieve them, or to help them feel better about their self-image/confidence. I'm hoping to personalize my workout plan to how my client is feeling that day and only push them as far as they wants to go. My personal style of training is to be kind, motivating, and fun. I want my client to have fun and feel accomplished at the end of each session. I'll be designing workouts that incorporate both things my client enjoys and new things they might want to try. I show motivation by verbal praise, high fives, and keeping it a positive environment. I want my client to feel comfortable, respected and heard.
