About Me

My name is Adriana Martinez and I obtained my bachelors degree from IUPUI. I'm currently a second year occupational student at IUPUI. I was born and raised in Elkhart, Indiana by both of my parents along with my older brother. The environment, and the way I was raised by my parents has shaped me into the person I am today. My personality can be described as passionate, caring, and hard working. My hobbies include longboarding, baking, exercising, photography and scrapbooking. Helping others reach their goals has always been one of my biggest motivations in life.

Personal Summary

My parents immigrated to the United States with hardly anything and taught me that I have to work hard if I want to achieve anything in life. My childhood shaped me into the person I am today, and it has motivated me to help others. I struggled throughout high school to choose a specific profession, however at the end of the day, I knew I wanted to work in healthcare system.
Throughout my academic career, I’ve worked hard to maintain a high GPA, volunteer, and focus on getting into a great college. Setting short term goals for myself has helped me stay focused on the ultimate goals. Since starting college, I've learned how to better manage my time, be more organized, and use various study tactics in order to do well in my studies while still having time to do activities I enjoy. My undergraduate classes have prepared me for hands-on job experience, graduate school, and the application of the fundamental principles I've learned.

Life experiences that have shaped me into the person I am today

My high school experience, and the love for music helped me grow as a person and come out of my comfort zone. I was a shy person my freshman year and didn't really talk to many people. I had joined orchestra since 5th grade but only talked to my friends. By the end of my freshman year, I was encouraged to audition for jazz band which was a big step for me to take. I was pushed out of my comfort zone, but I made it into the lower Jazz band by playing piano. Into my junior year, I was contacted by the high school percussion teacher to play keyboard for marching band. I knew it was a big opportunity but also, a big commitment. After giving it some thought, I accepted the offer and played that season. It was one of the best experiences of my life. I went from having stage fright every time we had a competition, to being extremely excited when we made it to State that year. My junior year was the best year for me because I learned so much about music and made many friends. I was in marching band again my senior year and I advanced into the higher jazz band. It was a lot of pressure to be in so many music groups but I learned different things from each group.

In high school, I got the opportunity to go to a jazz band trip to Chicago, where we played at a place called Misericordia. Misericordia is a place for people with mild to profound developmental disabilities. It was such a great experience to see how they're faces lit up when we started playing. Some of them even started dancing when the band played "Sweet Home Chicago". It was a life changing experience for me because I saw how we, a high school band, made an impact on these individuals. This experience led me to make my decision of becoming some form of therapist. I really want to bring joy to people and make sure that they could have functional lifestyles.
